The Croatian National Bank, as the central monetary institution of the Republic of Croatia, plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the financial system, managing monetary policy, and supervising credit institutions. One of the areas where the bank increasingly communicates with citizens and business entities is through digital accessibility of information. In this context, the mHNB mobile application holds particular importance as it enables the broader public to access various financial data, educational content, and tools for monitoring market indicators. The application also serves as a channel of transparency and direct communication between the regulator and users of financial services.
Technological specifics and development approach
The mHNB mobile application is developed using the Ionic framework, which is based on technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and enables the creation of cross-platform applications from a single codebase. In this project, we will utilize the sixth version of the Ionic framework, which brings numerous improvements in performance, responsiveness, and support for modern mobile operating systems. Furthermore, this latest version allows deeper integration with the design and security standards required by the Croatian National Bank. This approach ensures development efficiency and consistency in user experience across different devices, including both Android and iOS platforms.
API access and data availability
To fulfill its functional purpose, the mHNB application requires access to accurate, up-to-date, and secure data regularly published by the Croatian National Bank. As part of the project, access to the official HNB API is provided, enabling retrieval of data such as exchange rates, macroeconomic indicators, inflation rates, and other essential information. These data form the basis for the informative and interactive features offered to end users. The API is well-documented and technically optimized to ensure stable and secure communication between the application and the servers, minimizing the risk of errors or downtime.
Design, documentation, and visual interfaces
The redesign phase places significant emphasis on user experience (UX) and the visual identity (UI) of the application. The Croatian National Bank has supplied all necessary graphic files and documentation defining the structure, content, and visual guidelines for the new interface. Design elements are aligned with the institutional identity of the bank and developed to ensure simple, clear, and logical navigation within the application. Special attention is given to readability, color contrast, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and optimization for different device types and screen sizes.
Security and reliability standards
Given the regulatory status of the Croatian National Bank and the nature of the information used and displayed by the application, system security is a fundamental priority throughout the project. Security measures include encrypted communication, user authentication, protection against unauthorized access, and strict access control to sensitive data. Beyond technical aspects, procedural frameworks are established to govern data processing and user permissions. This guarantees that the application is not only technically sound but also compliant with regulatory requirements, including data protection legislation.
Development focused on user needs
The aim of refreshing the mHNB application is not limited to modernizing the design or improving technical solutions but also adapting to user expectations and behavior patterns. Usage analysis has identified common user behaviors, frequently sought information, and potential navigation or content presentation challenges. Based on these insights, development priorities have been redefined to provide faster access to information, more intuitive search functions, and increased interactivity. Ultimately, the user should experience tangible benefits through better information, simpler tracking of financial indicators, and enhanced confidence in accessing official sources.
Future outlook
The modernization of the mHNB mobile application represents an important step toward strengthening the digital capabilities of one of the most significant institutions within the Croatian financial system. Its significance extends beyond technical implementation, reflecting the need for accessibility, accuracy, and accountability in communication between the regulator and the public. Further feature development, continuous user feedback monitoring, and ongoing adaptation to changes in the financial and regulatory environment are anticipated. The mHNB application thus becomes a permanent tool for information, education, and digital connection between the central bank and the community.
