For the Museum of the City of Ilok, we developed a mobile application based on augmented reality (AR) as part of the exhibition “Stolen Heritage / Ukradena baština”. The exhibition focuses on valuable museum objects that were looted during the Croatian War of Independence and are now located outside the reach of national collections.
Through the app, visitors can experience a virtual return of these lost items to the museum space. By using their mobile device camera and scanning designated points, they activate photographs of the stolen objects displayed in real-world surroundings—precisely where they once stood. This creates a powerful emotional and educational experience that merges modern technology with the narrative of wartime cultural losses.
The application is designed to be accessible to a broad audience, featuring an intuitive interface and high-quality visual content. The photographs of the items are carefully positioned in space, enabling a realistic and immersive presentation even when the original artifacts are no longer physically present.
By using augmented reality as a tool for museum interpretation, the project contributes to preserving the memory of wartime losses and emphasizes the importance of recovering displaced cultural treasures. This application serves as a modern means of conveying historical truth and underlining the value of national heritage.
